Information I collect
Information you give me
When you use the contact form (built with WPForms), I receive what you type: typically your name, the email address you want me to reply to, and your message. I use it only to reply and to handle any work you ask about. Form entries are delivered by email to me and may also be stored in the WordPress database; I keep them only as long as needed for that conversation and normal business records.
Information collected automatically
- Server and security logs. My web host and WordPress record standard log data such as IP address, browser type, pages requested, referring page and time of the request. These logs are used for security, troubleshooting and abuse prevention and are kept for a limited period set by the host.
- Analytics. The Site uses Google Analytics (through Google Site Kit) to understand how pages are used in aggregate: pages viewed, approximate location (city or country), device type and how visitors arrived. Google Analytics uses cookies or similar identifiers. You can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Advertising. If ads are shown, Google and its partners may collect information described in the next section.
Advertising: Google AdSense and third-party vendors
This Site uses Google AdSense, a third-party advertising service operated by Google LLC, to display ads. In line with Google’s requirements:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this Site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info (or www.youronlinechoices.eu in Europe).
Other third-party vendors and ad networks certified by Google may also serve ads on this Site through Google’s systems and may use their own cookies. You can review the vendors Google works with in the list of Google ad technology providers, and for visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland the vendors are also shown in the consent message, where you can accept or reject them. Where a vendor offers it, you can opt out of its cookies for personalized advertising on that vendor’s website or at www.aboutads.info.
To learn more about how Google collects and uses data, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and Google’s advertising technologies.
Ads are clearly separated from Site content. I don’t control which specific ads appear, and an ad is not an endorsement.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. The Site and its partners use them for: essential functions (for example, keeping WordPress and the contact form working and remembering your consent choice), analytics (Google Analytics), and advertising (Google AdSense and certified vendors). See the Cookie Policy for details and how to control cookies in your browser.
How I use information
- To reply to messages and provide services you ask about.
- To run, secure and improve the Site.
- To measure Site traffic in aggregate.
- To display advertising that helps fund the Site.
- To comply with law and enforce the Terms of Use.
Legal bases (EEA/UK visitors): consent (advertising and analytics cookies, where required), legitimate interests (Site security and replying to inquiries you start), and contract (when you engage me for services).
Sharing
I share information only with service providers that run the Site (web hosting, WordPress plugins, email delivery), with Google for analytics and advertising as described above, when required by law, or to protect rights and safety. I do not sell contact-form information. Allowing advertising cookies may be considered a “sale” or “sharing” of personal information, or “targeted advertising,” under some U.S. state laws; see your choices below.
Your choices and rights
Everyone
- Turn off personalized ads at Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
- Ask me to access, correct or delete contact-form information you sent, through the contact form.
California and other U.S. state privacy rights
Residents of California (CCPA as amended by the CPRA) and other states with comprehensive privacy laws (such as Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon and others) may have rights to know or access, correct and delete personal information, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. To opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for advertising, use the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link shown on the Site for visitors in applicable states, or turn off personalized ads at Google Ads Settings. Where supported, the Site’s advertising honors Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signals as an opt-out request. In the past 12 months, the categories of personal information collected were identifiers (such as IP address and cookie IDs), internet activity, approximate geolocation, and contact-form details you chose to send.
To make a request, use the contact form. I may need to verify your request, and you can use an authorized agent. I will respond within the time the law requires and won’t discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
EEA, UK and Switzerland (GDPR / UK GDPR)
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, and the right to withdraw consent at any time (withdrawing doesn’t affect earlier processing). You can change your ad consent choices using the “Privacy and cookie settings” link shown on the Site when the consent message is active. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority. The Site is operated from the United States, so information is processed in the U.S.
Data retention and security
I keep contact-form messages as long as needed to respond and for normal business records, then delete them. Logs and analytics data are kept for the limited periods set by the host and Google Analytics settings. The Site uses HTTPS, and I take reasonable steps to protect information, but no online service is completely secure.
Children’s privacy
The Site is for adults and is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK). I don’t knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent me information, please tell me through the contact form and I will delete it.
Links to other sites
The Site links to other websites, such as statadventure.com, news sources and LinkedIn. Their privacy practices are their own; please review their policies.
Changes to this policy
I may update this policy as the Site or the law changes. The effective date at the top shows when it was last revised. Material changes will be noted on this page.
Questions about this page? Please use the contact form. That is the only way to reach me about this Site.
